Because a tobacco store was burnt down, and no tobacco was left, tho inhabitants of Chatham Island were recently reduced to smoking seaweed, teatreo or anything else, that world serve as a “smoke.”
To meet the food shortage, tlio Government steamer Mata-1 was sent to the Chatham®'a few days ago with between SO and 90 tons of provisions from New Zealand, and as tobacco was included, the ship’s arrival was very welcome. No ship had called at the Chathams from New Zealand since April, and the Matni. brought Iho first mail since then.
The Matai brought back twelvo tons of cargo, mostly -choose. She arrived at Wellington shortly offer L p.m. to-dny.
