Emphasising the advantage that foreign timbers bad hitherto enjoyed though their suitability and cheapness, and the care shown in preparation, grading and conditioning, Mr. J. R. Cosgrove, of the Government. Forest Research Laboratory. lecturing before the Royal Society of Arts, remarked' that the initial ivo of public bodies, backed by the Empire Marketing Board's, efforts, had led bn the increasing, use of Empire timbers. Producers were devoting more attention to 'British needs. -

Air. Cosgrove paid a special tribute to the beautiful Australian; timbers suitable for veneers, and. others for furniture, joinery, and flooring, and alwo to New Zealand timbers, notably kauri.

Entries . in the principal sections of the metropolitan market at.Addington were slightly smaller than nt recent sales and, generally speaking, a good clearance was, effected. Store sheep.—Ewes made ,up the bulk of the adult- store sheep entry. There was an extremely dull demand and useful looking ewes sold at bargain prices. Wethers, forward, were nearly all passed. Values were: Medium 2 and -l-th tliroeqnarter bred ewes (woolly) to 8s Bcl, 4 and 6-tli crossbred ewe's to 7s Stl. s.m. to 5s ; ordinary 4 and 6-tli halfbrad owes to ■ls 7d, aged and inferior 3d tp 2s.

Store lambs. — There was a large entry of indifferent quality and the demand was weaker. Values were; Good mixed sex lambs to 8s 8d; medium (Is 3d to 7s 3d, ordinary 4s 3d lo 6s, inferior 2s to -Is. Fat lambs: There was a. yarding of 8800, with many light and plain sorts. Exporters competed -keenly at LI over schedule rates. Butchers.’ requirements were not large, but prices were unchanged. Values were.. Extra prime to 20s 7d, prime Ids Oil to 19s 6d, medium 13s lo 1.65, light Ss Od to 12s 6(1- ' ■

Fat sheep: An entry of 4800 met with a. steady sale,-with no quotable change in valm-s. Values were: Extra. prime heavy wethers to 19s Id. prime 17s to 18s Cal, medium 11s 6<l to 16s 6d, ordinary 11s Od to 13s Od. (light 9s to Ms, prime heavy ewes to 12s -Id. medium weight 9s Od to 11s 6d, ordinary 7s 3d io 9s. light 5s to Fat call In: The entry 10l a I led 524, including a few pens from the West Coast, with tlu; average quality below that at recent markets. The demand for all except beef was extremely dull, while cows and heifers eased from IBs to 1.55. Steers were hard to quit, except for the very best penned. Best beef made 20s lo 245, good 15s Cal to 19s, heavy 12s to 15s, inferior down to 10s, and rough down to 10s. Values were: Extra prime heavy steers to £l2 7s (id. prime £8 to £lO 10s, medium £5 10s to £7 10s, ordinary to £2 15s, extra prime heifers to £S 7s (id, prune £5 15s to £7, medium £3 to £5, light to £2 10s, extra prime cows to £8 2s 6d, prime £4 to £5 10s, medium £2 5s to £3 10s, light to £2. Fat pigs: The entry of fat pigs was a medium one and over the earlier stages the prices were. 4s to 5s a head better. The keenness, however disappeared as the sale progressed. Values were: Choppers £2 to £4 13s 6d, baconers 37s to 44s Od, heavy bacouors 46s 6cl to 56s 6cl, extia heavy to 55s 6d, average- price, per lb., 3id to 4jdporkers 2os Od to 28s 6d; heavy porkers 29s 6d io 34s 6d; average price per lb. scl to did. RATE RATES MAINTAINED

(Press Association 7 AUCKLAND, Jan. 27. A smaller yarding than usual ot fat beef met with a fair demand at the weekly Westfield market to-day and last week’s rates-were maintainocl. Heavy choice ox sold at 21s per 1001 bs-; choice and prime ox 1/s Od to 20s; secondary and plain ox los to 17s- prime voting cow and heifer beef 16s to I9s; and ordinary row beef 8s to 15s. Extra heavy prime steers ranged in price from £3 is oil to VS 12s 6d; heavy prime steers £< to 08; lighter prime steers £5 15s to .£(> 17s (id; light prime steers £4.10s to £5 12s Gd; small and unfinished steers £3 to £4 7s Gd. Extra prime voting cows and heifers made £4 os to £4 17s Gd; heavy prime cows and heifers £3 10s to £4 2s Gd; lighter prime rows anil heifers £2 10s to £3 7s Gd ; other killahle cows £1 to £2 A medium entry of calves met with, a. depressed market and, except in odd eases for extra prime runners, values again receded. Runners made 28s to 5(7s ; heavy vealers 34s to 40s; medium vealers 27s to 31s; light vealers 21s to 255; small, vealers 8s to 15s; rough and hneket-led 5s to 12s; hobby calves is to 3s. TJio yarding of sheep was up to the average, but the quality was patchy and the. effect of the dry spell was noticeable in many consignments. Prices in consequence, showed- a slight’weakening tendency, especially for wethers. Ewes were i.u good demand and last sales rates,- "ere maintained, wethers 'dropping about Is. Extra heavy prime wethers inane 13s to 13s 9d; medium I.os Gd lo 12s Del; light- 9s Gd to 10s 3d; extra heavy prime young ewes 8s tkl to 9s 3d; medium and heavy prime ewes Gs to 7s-9d; lambs 7s Dd to 13s.
