Regarding the 'suggested' laying ol a drain in front of. the MalcarakaMatawhero Hall, the hall committee advised" that it would: he prepared to find the pipes for the work—.lt was decided to carry on with the work •tinder the 1 No. 5 .scheme as soon .as the pipes were made available. The Mat'amata County Council advised that it could, not support’ the additional resolution passed by the Cook County body in connection with reading taxation and ' the allocation thereof.—Tlic'letter was received. A committee of Waituhi residents wrote asking for attention to the stormwater drain in that aera, stating tht the necessary repairs would employ 10 men for one month;—The chairman iand engineer were empowered to inspect the clra'n and take any • necesary action in' the matter.' *'• ■ '• ’ The • -White New Zealand League forwarded pamphlets etc. in regard to the movement and asked for the council’s support.—The information was received and laid on the table for the 1 information of councillors. The Minister for Public Works advised tht the council’s' application for a grhnt of £75 for Stevens road, for the purpose of erecting a bridge, had arrived' 100 late"for the main estimates, but would he: considered when the supplementary estimates are. being prepared.—The letter was received; . Cameron reported that he; had .seized'l76 head, of stock for impounding during the month ended on November 14!, Ranger Harris reported impounding 16 and finding 39 head grazing on' the roads ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer, Mr. A. Guthrie, reported on maintenance' and construction of highways and country roads, during the month ending November .15, as follows: — u M,‘iint.enanee.-—General maintenance of a light nature was carried out in all ridings during the month. The tractor graders have been engaged surfacing highways and metalling roads and trimming up back roads. The bridge hands have been engaged on repairs to bridges, placing of culverts and general maintenance. The Ford 'lorrv has been engaged on general maintenance and removal-of slips -at Hangaroa. Under No. o scheme for unemployment, relief a reduced number of men have been employed on drainage, formation of footpath, bridge painting and general work. Owing to relaxing oi the regulations it is expected that a considerable number of unemployed will be absorbed on development work on farms.
“Highways.—Gisborne Wairoa via Alorere: Light -shingle repairs were carried out between end of bitumen at Manutuke and Karaua. Little or no work _ was done on bitumen section. Gisborne Wairoa via Hangaroa.—At Gentle Ann'e, water tables were cleaned. On Waerengn-o-kuri section watertables were cleaned and coiners or road widened in places. At Avondale to Burns-Graham’* similar work was done. On Bluff section three men were engaged cleaning watertables and removing slips. Two culverts were taken out and removed to more favorable positions. At the top end general maintenance has been carried out in addition to surfacing of clay road with tractor grader. Gisborne Opotiki via Coast. — Repairs* to b'tumen pavement were carried out on this Thighway. Gisborne Opotiki via Motu—Light shingle repairs were carried out near Kaiferatahi Hill in addition to trimming up with power grader. "Between the Alakaraka Cemetery and Alakaraka, the edges of the highway were trimmed and a footpath i* being formed and the existing drain improved. Ormond via Waibhlka.— Sides of bitumen have been .reinforced with shingle repairs to bitumen pavement were carried out and some repair work has also been done to Willan’s Bridge. Patutalii-Rere.— The tractor graders have been employed trimming the sides of tbi> highway. Slips have also been removed at Wharekopae. “Licenses were issued during the month as ['olows: Heavy traffic 6 (fees collected £23 7s (jd); motor drivers 25 (£5 17s); building permits 5 (£4 ss); fees totalled £33 9- 6d.” The report was adotped. TRAFFIC CONTROL. The joint traffic inspector, Air. U . H. Scott, reporteu a s follov.s: — “No. 1 section.—l have made two trips over this district, namely, for th e purpose of watching heavy traffic carting. “No. 2 section. —iOne trip was made to Motu and three additional trips as far as Te Karaka and one trip to, Whatatutu. , “No., 3 section. —I visited this district between Gisborne, Hick’s Bay, Port Awanui and Tuparoa. Two unlicensed drivers and one unlicensed motor lorry were located. I also made two additional trips ns far as Tolaga Bav. “Licenses issued: Heavy traffic, 6 drivers’ licenses, new applications; 14 renewed, 3 previously issued by other local bodies, and two issued in place of lost licenses.’’ The report was adopted.
