A trail of death apd damage was left by the worst August gale in 29 years. Seven campers on the Isle of Wight returning to Fortsmouth, tos-sed up for five places in, a rowing boat, which was overwhelmed by heavy seas, three being drowned; , K A child wps swept off Margate beach by a huge wave. Henry Robinson and Henry Aldridge, the latter a well-known and popular Lebo r worker, a close friend of Air. G. Lansbury, rushed in to save fV* child, but both were drowned. . t Rising without warning after torrential rains, the River Whiteadder swept over a dam near Hutton, Berwickshire, on which eight laborers were working. Four, all Irishmen, including, two brothers, were drowned.
A father of twin daughters was taking refuge in the ancient Finstwaite tower, which was struck by lightning. One daughter was killed, and the others knocked insensible.
A nurse and a 14-year-old boy were drowned in a swollen, stream at Haddington, where 40 families are homeless owing to floods. Yachts are still limping in. from the Fastnet race, and the Dorado has been declared the winner.

Three lives were lost in a. boating accident off the Isle of Wight, and a bungalow village which has grown up on a shingle beach near AYinchetsea, one of the old Cinque Ports, has been cut off by the waves, .whim ■threaten to. undermine the iouncla lions of buildings.
