STATE PURCHASES OF HAWKE’S BAY SHEEP.
FREE DISTRIBUTION OF :r .v\ MUTTON. ,
■ (Press Association.l Aug. 18. Taking advantage of tho low prices ipf isheep in Hawke’s Bay, tho Government purchased 20.500 at, frpmj.4.s 6d to 5s 6d per head. This gardened the price, during a difficult period, and the Minister of Health,( .thq Hopi A. J, Stallworthy, oxpres-; gratitude to the freezing companies; wtich gave six months’ cold storage Tree, and to the shipping and •: carrying companies for their generous assistance.
Tho result has been the distribution of mutton, free, through hospital !hoards and other relief organisations, to families from Auckland to Dunedin, including Wellington, Chnstohureh, Palmerston North, Wanganui- and smaller towns. Tho distribution will be continued for some weeks.
The scheme did not compote with ordinary butchers,- as the mutton was only distributed 'in necessitous cases. It enabled thousands of meals t 0 bo' provided at a cost, for prime mutton, of- just under 2d per lb.
