BOGUS FLORINS
CIRCULATION IN GISBORNE
For a time it would be as well to regard "two-shilling pieces with suspicion. as yesterday a spurious florin /was handed to Senior-Sergeant Wilde, having .been received by a woman as part of her wages for a day’s work. The coin, which, was dated, 1917, arid 'made .of a heavy, silver-colored metal, is rather a crude effort and would he easily recognised as' bogus. The actual stamping of the-“head” mid “tail” is a good imitation of the genuine article, but the edges of the' coin are poorly finished, and the metal has a shine not unlike mercury. differing from the dull, polish of, a silver coin of that date. ~ The coin naturally , .will not ring when dropped, hut falls with’ a thud like lead. Only one coin lias been reported .so far, but it is probable that others are in circulation. JTho police are. investigating the matter.
