TOWN WATER SUPPLY
ONLY TWO FEET IN TE ARAI RESERVOIR MANGAFOIKE UNABLE TO ASSIST. SUPPLEMENTARY SUPPLY EXHAUSTED IN ONE SHIFT Unless rain , falls soon there is serious danger that Gisborne may be ( 'without, water in the course of a few days. In the opinion of the Borough Engineer, Mr. G. E. Dartoh. the, position lias never been wo'rso in the history of-the town. Pumping operations were commenced at Mangapoike, with the object of supplementing the failing supply from Te Arai. but after one' ’shift the' resources of Mangapoike were practically exhausted, ,as little • water was available after the current heat wave. Householders are. urged to use the strictest economy, for it is not now a question of worrying about gardens, but the health of the' town is threatened, for should the water fail, then the sewerage system will be in danger of Incoming clogged. Alto tiler aspect of the position-is that industries depending on water for "continuance mav be compelled to close down, tlius adding to the burden of..unemployment,. At 5 o'clock last night there was only two feet of water in the reservoir at Te- Arai and no water in the. cfjeek lower down.
