This mucli-cliseusscd question h- as been raised once more by the action of the Italian Government in deciding to curtail the activities of Italian women at competitive sports' meetings to "avoid anything which can lead a woman from her natural and fundamental mission—maternity.” Sir William Arbuthnot Lane, the physician, said to a "Daily Mail]” reporter :
"Mussolini shows his wisdom , by this step. It is a very .sensible thing. There is no doubt that a craze, for athletics is sweeping over the women of foreign countries. Any excess is hound to have a serious effect on the motherhood of a nation, pdo not believe in barring athletics to women in moderation. In Great Britain sufficiently large numbers of women do not indulge in an excess of athletics to affect the motherhood of the country.”
