WAINUI TO BE BROKEN UP

END OF THE “WEST COAST

GREYHOUND.”

(Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, June LI

Ip the forty-third year of her career. the Union Steam Ship Co.’s steamer Waiimi lias been sold to a firm of ship-breakers of Dunedin, who will dismantle her, and probably dispose of the hull by sinking it at- sea. Tlie Waiimi is a steel vessel of 684 tons gross, built at Dumbarton in 1886. ” For the greater part of her life she was engaged in the southern coastal trade, but in February. 1924, she was transferred to the AupldandGisborne passenger service. Eighteen months later she was withdrawn, tlie Anchor Company’s cargo steamer Waiinea having been chartered ior tlie, trade. During the past two, years the Wainni has been laid up at Aucklandoccasionally doing duty as a coal bulk. ‘

The negotiations with the buyers wore completed, to-day. and it is expected that an early start will be made on the work of stripping the vessel of.all fittings worth keeping. The buyers, Messrs. Borla.sc and McKay, have -broken up many el the Union Steam ..Ship Co.’s old steamers. Their last job m .-Auckland was the dismantling of tlie old Wanaka about two -years ago. - It was, when she was on the Wellington, Nelson and West Coast ports run, between 3d and 40 years ago, tliat Hie. Wairmi won a reputation which resulted in her being designated tlie “Terror of Cook Strait.” In fair weather and foul, the. Waiimi could he depended on to battle- her way across to the - other side. She was also known as the “Vest 'Coast Greyhound,” being the fastest boat then on that run.
