Nov. 27. -•Fourteen blacks were sentenced to periods of six to 12;months’ gaol, for sheep-killing in thh Qoodnadatfca district, They admitted the offence, pleading that they, 1 “too much hungry.” A representative of the Aboriginal Friends’ Association, however, stated that the natives were well treated by the station owners. The sheep were killed by order of the tribal head men,, and some punishment, other than imprisonment was necessary as a deterrent, because the natives did not mind gaol, where they were well fed and clothed.
The judge said imprisonment was the only penalty he was empowered'' to inflict. , x
