HANDSOME CHURCH.

NEW MAKAR AKA BUILDING

The Bishop of Waiapu, Dr. Sedgwick, i>erformed the opening ceremony in connection with the Alakaraka 'Anglican Church in the preisenca of an exceptionally large gathering .of parishioners’ on Thursday night. The Bishop was assisted by tl«i Rev. W. G. S. Cameron, Archdeacon H. W. ■ Williams, and Revs, IV. T. Palm, C. G. Salt, and R. Hcclgson.

His Lordship took as the text of his sermon, St." Luke XIX, verse 46, “My House is the House of Prayer.’’ The bishop- congratulated the vicar and parishioners on the accomplishment’of a Jong-felt want in the district, and expressed his gratification in the design, permanent materials, and workmanship of the building. He made feeling reference to the donor of the section, Mr. J. Wall, and to the officer of the church, the late Mr. T. Halbert, who had passed into the nearer presence of God. Dr. Sedwick further expressed his delight that all the! furmture, excluding the seats, had been given to' the glory of God as memorials to dear ones.

“Every house' to be a real home must be a house of prayer,” he added, “but the church should be the house of prayer in this part of the district. .It ■ should be the powerhouse or distributing station of prayer, and I hope that the church, which will be always open, will he .used for prayers. We must never think of it merely as a building to 1 © used only on Sundays but as our Father’s house, t© which we should delight to enter at- all times for prayer and intercession. There is nothing secular in the world except sin, and each day .of the week is God’s day.” -Nr-

The collections at the 8 a.m., Holy Communion and I evening services, which . Were to augment, tlm building fund, amounted to £74' 12s 3d. it eluded in which wate £SO 3s received from native admire'rs and friends of the late Mr. T. Halbert. Further substantial sums have yet to come from other East Coast .settlements.

At the conclusion of the service, suppar was ’ dispensed by the ladies , of the parish. .
