LOSS FORETOLD

MR. COLEMAN AND SOLDIER SETTLEMENTS. AN INTERESTING CLAIM. “I notice,” said Mr. Coleman at Mamvtuke on Monday night, “that Mr. Lysnar, at Nuhak.a, took exception to my remarks that the Government had given largo grants to.the wealthy landowners in the purchasing of" land for soldier settlers.” ilr. Coleman went on: “Mr. Lysnar states that this land for the soldier settlers was purchased, nor- by ■the Reform Government, but by t;ic National Government, and that -• parties' in Parliament would have to .share the blame. That statement is r.ot true,, for the National Government was dissolved in 1919. When those purchases were being made, the Labor Party condemned them, claiming that the prices being .paid weretocV high and that the values would have to be reduced by £7.000,000. That statement was laughed to scorn by every member on the Reform benches. But those values have already been written down by £->.- 000,000 and will, without doubt, have to be written, down another £2,000,'ooo'. When this is done, we will not lie. giving the returned soldier anythinnr, but simplv charging him a fair rental, but we. will have made a present of £7,000,000 to the wealthy landowners.”
