STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. The Stewards' Handicap at Riecarton was, as usual, a great betting race, with Silver Paper, Bright Glow and :Oimabue at 'the head of-the quotes. Silvermine, the winner, paid a double figure dividend, and Cliildsplay was at almost as good a price to win. Silvermine, Consent, Ohildsplay and Oimabue, on tho outside, and Silver Paper, Royal Tractor and UOyal Saxon on the inside, appeared to begin best, while Arrow Lad Was squeezed back. Silvermine and Childsplay led on to the. course proper from Solrose, Consent, Bright Glow and_ Oimabue, with Crown Area coming through on the inside, Silvermine and Childsplay drew away over the last furlong. ‘ Silvermine winning by half a. length aright Alow was two lengths away, and then came Crown Area, Booster, Arrow Lad, Royal Saxon, Cimahue and Royal Tractor. Silvermine and 1 Childsplay outpaced the field. Bright Glow will be improved by the race, and Crown Area and Boostei both finished on very well. Royal Saxon and Arrow Lad ivere unlucky. Cimabue was beaten by his weight. N.Z. CUP RACE A SPECTACULAR CONTEST For the New Zealand Cup Oratrix from first to last was first choice, but until the end of the betting it was in doubt who would be the second favorite between Rapier and Hoylake, and Rapier' wound up with the honor. Beau Ge-ste led out of the barrier from Hoylake, Oratrix, Rotor and Shining Armour. Hoylake drew ,clear at ’ tho stand, -the first half mile taking 53sec., from Beau Geste and Rotor, who were followed by Shining Armour and Oratrix, and then at intervals came Micv Locket. Rapier, Pink Note and Black Mint. The first six furlongs took lmin. 19sec. Hoylake being about six lengths clear of Beau Gesto and Shining Armour, with Rotor and Oratrix another two length si away and then came Lucy Locket, Beacon light-, Pink Note ant! Set Sail. The mile and a quarter was run in 2min. Bsec., and Hoylake was coming back to his field, the closest to him still being Beau Geste, Shining Armour, Rotor and Oratrix. with Rapier and Pink Note handy. Hoylake turned for home just ahead of Beau Geste, Rotor and "Oratrix, with Rapier putting in great work. Oratrix had collared Hoylake a furlong from_ homo and Rapier was sticking to his work. Oratrix had enough advantage to heat Rapier home hv half a length, with Hoylake a length away third. Beau Ge-sto was fourth and then came in order Pink Note. Rotor, Beacon light, Shining Armour, Set Sail and Lucy Locket, with Black Mint and Count Cavour last.. The public placed the horses correctly. In a spectacular contest Oratrix won well, but Rapier would have troubled her In another stride or two. Hoylake set a good pace and invested the race with plenty of interest. Beau Geste looked a possibility to spring a surprise at the turn. Nothing else ever had a chance NOTES AND NEWS'. The exact sum won in stakes by the Australian-bred mare- Maple during the five seasons she has competed is computed at £10,707. The Auckland-bred horse Tea Bell, who was raced successfully in Melbourne, was sold there recently for 250gns. and it is understood that ho is booked for transportation to India.
