LOCAL -PRODUCE. MARKET. ACTIVITY IiToRASS' SEED. ■ MAIZE STILL QUIET/ ‘ Fairly, quiet times.,’have -Been Experienced on the local produce market during the past week. .. . Grass seed, however, is maintaining tho activity which it has shown during the past few weeks, and good business in this lino is reported. The farmers are putting in seed early this season and, in consequence, merchants are finding the demand good. Maize continues very quiet and sales are being made at 5s 7d on the Auckland wharf, which is equal to about 5s f.0.b., is.i. Gisborne. A Cartons ar© rather firmer and sales are being made at 4s Id in the south. Potatoes are m very short compass, and South Island merchants consider that there are only sufficient supplies fpr that island, lot alone for export north. • Super-phosphate orders continue to come in, for" small quantities, from farmers all over the district. MATAWHERO SALE BRISKER SALE FOR, FAT AND STORE SHEEP After two weeks interval, the Matawhero stock sale was resumed yesterday in unfavorable weather. There was an entry of 300 fat sheep and 800 store .sheep, and a good attendance of the public. The sale was somewhat brisker than recent sales for both fats and stores. Store sheep.—A few ewes with 200 per cent, of lamb si made to LI IDs 9d, and average ewes with good lambs to £1 16s 4d. Empty ewes in good order brought £1 2s and £1 U» 3d, while shorn, empty ewes realised 17s and 17s 9d. Good shorn tvyo-'oolh Wethers made £1 3s 7d and £1 4s Id. Other prices were: 33 ewes with 33 lambs £1 11s 7d; 50 eves and 50 lambs £1 14s • 31 ewes with 50 lambs, in good order, £1 16s 4d; 34 ewes and 17 lambs, all good, £1 16s 3d; 10 good ewesi with 12 small lambs £1 13s; 7 ewes and 14 lambs. £1 19s 9d: 16 ewes with 17 lambs £1 13s 7d ; 22 ewes and 22 lambs, _£l 10s 6d; 24 fairly good ewes with IS lambs, £1 12s; 60 good-conditioned ewes £1 2s; 40 shorn ewes, m good order, 17s ; 9 ewes, 17s ; 18 shorn ewes, 17s 9d; 12 ewes, shorn and plain, 12s 2d; 15 splendidly-condit-ioned ewes, £1 0s 3d; 27 2-th wethers, shorn, £1 4s Id; 41 do.. £1 3s 7d. Hoggets: Well-grown and good conditioned hoggets made £1 7s 4d; and good, mediumAize hoggets £1 Is Id and £1 0s 6d. Other prices were: 137 hoggets, good medium size, £1 Is Id; 162 well-grown hoggets, good condition, _£l 7s 4d; 26 good hoggets, a medium lot, £1 Os Pd; 13 fair-conditioned hoggets 18s 7d.
Fat slieep.—Verj prime ewes made £1 8s 6d while others went to £1 7s and £1 ss. Shorn ewes realised 17s 3d and 18s 6cl, Second-grade ewes sold for £1 3s 7d for woollies, while shorn ewes made 15s 6d. Owing to the heavy rain and the Royal Show, the entries were small tor the stock sale. Fan sheep met with a dragging sale, butchers having filled up the previous week. BRITISH COTTON TRADE EXPORTS INCREASING (Britisn Wireless..RUGBY, Nov. 1. A Manchester message states that shipments of cotton, artificial silk, and mixed piece goods continue to expand. For the first nine months of this year the British exports of these goods totalled 76,975,667 square- yards, to a value of £5,006,399, being an-increase of 27,301,926 square yards, valued at . £K 198,039 over the corresponding period of 1927.
