Professors' Salaries.

PR 0 POSED 1 INCREASE

(Special To The Times). WELLINGTON, Nov. I . .Overtures for an increase in the salaries of professors of the University Colleges will be made to the Education Department By the various colleges next week For some) time past the College Councils have been concerned at the level of salaries paid to tlie professorate. and it is understood that concrete, proposals for an increase will be placed before tlie Minister of Education CHon. 11. A. Wright). Recently, during an investigation of the position, the Department requested information as to the amount of fees paid to professors for examination work during the past year. This, it has been made clear to the Department, is no guide. In tlie first place the professors earn these fees by extra, work, in the second place they may' receive a fairly large cheque in one year, and in the next year get nothing. Ju addition there are high fees paid for examinations in such subjects as economics, education, and history, which, attract large numbers of firstyear students, whereas tlie total firstyear students m zoology or geology may be half a dozen.
