A PLEA FOR THE TREES ON THE STREETS.

(To The Editor). Sit, —In almost every young country’s existence there seems to be a period when “progress” runs riot, Surely, Mr. Editor, the power lines and their accompanying “pigeon lofts” which are being erected in more and more of Gisborne’s streets are sufficiently disfiguring 'to our once • beautiful thoroughfares without our local bodies sweeping away the lew remaining trees ol our once glorious avenues. We at one time had old poplar trees lining nearly every street in the town area but, unfortunately, water supply, sewerage, and other rnddern necessities have caused them one by one to be condemned.

Our borough engineer may be pardoned lor the view we know he takes concerning trees in the streets, lie lias lived in Gisborne for a comparatively short time and can be expected to have little sentimental regard for our trees, but to those of us who have seen their growth year after year and admired their increasing magnificence, to s°e them ruthlessly sacrificed because thc v cause a few cracks on the footpath makes ns feel that we are losing all interest in our town.

V fine who attended tbo 0 isLorne school and enjoyed Hie ulcusum shade of the old plane trees in Derby Street and the, others in "a 1 merston Road now alas! removed, allow me to urge that the church and school authorities protest most, vigorously to our council in their proposal to remove the few remaining treds in Derby street. They neither crack the paving of the footpath nor nterefere with electric .wires in any way and, surely, they may he spared until a later generation will see their beauty and realise what an asset there is in every old trees we have growing in the borough of Gisborne. [ am. tours etc., • • '“SENTIMENTAL BLOKE.’ -
