Spence, of Francis street, BtirWood. had a miraculous escape from death this morning. The accident happened when the traffic on Ferry -road was heavy. Spence, who was allying a light, van, turned out of Ollivier’s road in the dim-lion of the citv. running alongside a city-bound tiaincar. Before he had gone 20 yards h•ollided with an outward bound firm the light motor being crushed between it and the inward bound car. Spence was pinned into what was the driving seat by the wheel. He managed to get out through -where the windshield had been with nli worse injuries than a bruised chest and a small cut on one finger. The van was extricated by means of a horse and dray. As a result the motor cyclist was thrown from his machine hut was unhurt Going hack, lie found the youth, James Selwyn Chappell, aged 20. seriously injured, having evidently been knocked down by a passing cat or cycle just previously. A post-mortem examination of the body of Miss Rita Clark, aged about 30, ’who died to-day in the nursing home of Nurse Georgina Ellen Colnett. at Grey Lynn, has been ordered by the coroner. Miss Clark was found in a state of collapse and a doctor was. called,- hut sha died shortly before he arrived.
