(Pres# Association.! DUNEDIN, Oct. 31. John Wilfred Lawson was charged at the Police Court to-day before Mr Bartholomew, S.M., with obtaining £8 from Joseph Carter by means of a valueless cheque. A further charge of obtaining. £lO by the same means was also, preferred again st. him. A further £3 was deposited some days later, Accused then left town but returned a few days ago. He exhausted his. funds and drew a cheque for £B. which lie presented to the barman of an hotel. At the same time he produced a deposit slip for £BO which ho showed to the barman, whom he satisfied that he, was in funds. The barman got the licensee to cash the cheque. Two days Intel he went to the hotel again, and presented a cheque, for £lO to the* licensee’s daughter, saying that the licensee had said that he was to cash it, and she did so. Accused had been in Otago for some eight'cen months. He was a farm labo r er and had been working in the country. He was a married man living apart from his wfe. ~He. had a '‘record.” A sentence of 12 months imprisonment on each charge was im posed, the sentences to be concurrent.
