MOTORISTS' CAMPS.
MAKARAKA DOMAIN CHOSEN BEST AVAILABLE As, ALTERNATIVE TO BEACH Makaraka Domain was approved bv tiie Gisborne branch of the A.A.A. as'a second camping ground for visiting motorists, . not desirous of pitching.tent on the Waikanae beach site, at a meeting of the executive yesterday. The Chairman (Mr E. Tolerton) informed members that the committee set up to inspect sites suitable for a camping ground had come to the conclusion that the domain was most suitable for the purpose. He understood that the Borough Council was prepared to spend a fairly substantial sum in effecting improvements for the convenience of campers on this reserve. The camping sice on Waikanae beach, of course, would still be available to those motorists who .desired .to use. it..but there were many who desired " more privacy than the facilities of the beach offered. The- executive would have to decide immediately if the Domain were suitable in view of the nearness of the summer season. . . Mr H. H. DeCostn asserted that the site was ideal among those from which the Association hadl to choose, and' would, no doubt, be favored by the majority of visitors to the town, and this view was supported by Mr J. It. Kirk, who stated that the Council had considerable accumulated funds which they would, no doubt, be prepared to spend in improvements to the ground. The question of whether the nearness of the cemetery to the camping ground would deleteriously affect the domain from the viewpoint, of visiting campers was dismissed, but. when it was pointed* out’ that the entrance was from the Makaraka end and that the Council was prepared to plant a few quick growing trees, which would effectively cut out the sight of the cemetery, it dispensed with practically every objection to the site.
Lt was pointed out that the Council wouldj no doubt, instal sanitary conveniences and lay water on to the ground, whilst in addition-n. road would require to he formed through the Domain down to the river, where motorists were most likely to . eamn. niid cattle stop? at the gates would also be necessary. 11 would he impossible fo provide gas cooking appliances, but some arrangement might be made with the Power Board to supply heating requirements. The executive unanimously decided to approve of the Makaraka Domain as ■ a camping ground for visiting motorists. •'■■■■■
