Stones, fists and boots were used by the attackers. One Italian was kicked unmercifully on tho ground. ' His assailant was captured by a plain-clothes constable. Five volunteers were treated in-hos-pital; all were Italians. One had sustained serious head injuries. The police charged with batons and scattered the attackers and then rushed away to similar sceues elsewhere. Eventually they restored peace and order. He declares that the Italian community is enormously excited, demanding drastic measures for the protection of Italian workers. S. Caros added: “This is the fifth attempt on the lives of my people. I therefore demand full satisfaction for my country-men. My Government is not disposed to tolerate failure adequately to protect Italian residents in Australia. If action is not taken immediately, they will be forced to take measures to protc-ct themselves.

The Police Commissioner said the police were straining every nerve to stop the outrages. Cabinet to-morrow considers raising the reward from £SOO to £IOOO for information leading to the conviction of the bomb throwers. Two more Italians have been admitted to hospital to-day as the result of the rioting.
