LOCAL PRODUCE MARKET POTATOES EXPECTED TO FIRM MAIZE WEAKER OATS IMPROVE BY 2d. As always the case during Carnival Week, business on the local produce market, during the past week, has been practically nil. ! Maize hqs been at a standstill so far as local trade is concerned, as plentiful supplies are apparently still coming forward from the Bay of Plenty and the market at Auckland is even weaker than previously. It is becoming more and more obvious, every day that Gisborne growers will have to lower the prices asked if they are to compete successfully with the Bay of Plenty article. Next year, the latter district’s crops will be considerably larger, so that Gisborne growers will have to accept even less than m this. Maize is now selling in Auckland at 5s 6d and 5s 7d on the wharf and sales, even at that price, are difficult to make. Potatoes, to judge by reports from the south, are becoming very short in supply and it may he confidently expected that South Island tubers will firm shortly to about £l6. Oats have firmed by 2d per bushel during the past week and South Island sales are being made at 4s f.o.b. A Gartons. STOCK AND SHARE MARKET (Press Association./ CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 26.
