MONTHLY MEETING

The Poverty Bay Power Board meeting yesterday was presided over by tlie Chairman (Mr F. R. Ball). There - were al so preeent: Messrs, % Mirfield, C. H. Bridge, A. C. Steele, A. J. Nicol, C. H. Williams. T. Corson, F, S.. Bowen and L, BL' Maclean. ■ The Consulting Engineer (Mr H. F. Toogood) presented, the following report of the month’s operations : “The progress during the month lias been mainly a‘ matter of cleaning up, apart, 'from service, lines, '‘Tho following is larger /work carried) out: Repongaere lino has been commenced and will he _ completed within a week. Tho Station Road, Ormond, has been completed. The Whangara line lias also been completed during the period. The street light brackets from Whataupoko have been reconditioned in readiness for Kaiti. _ The underground cable has been laid at .Patutahi substation, but the jointing, up is yet to bo done. The authorised extension of the Ngatapa. line has been pegged out in readiness for construction as soon as poles arrive. The change-over in the Borough has been proceeded with and only a very section now requires to be completed. During the coming month the Patutahi sub-station will lie finished as far as it is possible in. anticipation of the Public Works Department supply. It is expected that the restriction at the Power House . with regard to A .C. supply will’be removed in a month’s time, when the change over of house services from, D.O. to A.C. will continue. There remains several jobs to be done which are in the nature of cleaning up, which will occupy the present reduced staff completely. Included in this work is the overhauling of lines in soft country where poles require to he straightened up. • POWER HOUSE, “No. 2 set is at present in the hands of the contractors and, if the oil cooling system which is required is to hand it should.be in service in about two weeks’ time. No. 1 set has then to be overhauled and a new' cylinder liner and piston fitted. Tlie condenser of the steam set has been cleaned out and we havo now full service from the engine. The brickwork of tho boilers. is giving some concern but we believo it will hang out for another two months. There has been no serious trouble with No. 1 set. V.P. engines' during the month, but it is still in hand governing and running with only five cylinders. • “Kaiti Works Supply: Tho cubiolo.s, transformer-and metering equipment has been ordered for this supply. We have made an offer of £SO for that portion of the damaged underground cable which was ordered for Patutahi sub-station and which, if the offer is accepted, would he suitable for this job.” Tho construction foreman (Mr. J. Ouseley), in his report, stated:— “Gang No. 1 completed all high and low tension services to Whangara on Oct. 5, broke camp and returned to depot on the 6th. Started wiring high and low tension to wool works, Hexton, on Monday, tho Bth, and completed same on the ]oth, Two gangs were put into the Hexton job, makiug seven men. The same men started on the back road, Ormond township, and finished on October 16, running low tension and services.

Gang No. 2 fiUed all street light brackets and lamps in Whataupoko and switched on on the 27th'; dismantled old lamps, wire and crossarms. completed requirements for To Koraka Bowluig Club and fitted extra timber to pile structure and are now running the high and, low tension in Repongaere. “Gang No. 3 is running extra wires to cookers in. Borough; '.dismantled 15 poles and erected poles in Kahutia- and Customhouse Streets and five side streets ready for A.C. mains; completed Gladstone Road heavy mains, Derby and Cebden Sts “Gang No. 5 -finished Maunder and Baillie’s, Oct. 14th; strained up existing D,C. pumping circuit . along Palmerston Road and Cobden St. i dismantled old cable in Kaiti, joined No. 1 gang to wire Hexton Woolworks and Ormond Township back road.

Gang: Fnislied Waimata line transformers to Glenroy; changed and erected several transformers and attended to all new services and cutting trees.” The station engineer’s report showed that on September, 264,979 units were generated at the power house, which was an increase of 110.646 compared with the same period last year. The maximum load was recorded on Saturday, Sept. 29, when 822 K.V.A- was registered. The number of consumers of ligld and power up to tlie present month totalled 3182, according to an office report. Tho inspector (Mr P. Mann) reported as follows: “Inspecting and testing has been carried out on extensions and new installations over tlie whole of the district where completion notices havo been received, and current is, or soon will, be, available. Mrs. Murphy’s private electrical installation situated at Manutuke has been inspected and a report sent advising the work required to be carried out. The meter board changeover gang have been replacing meter boards via Gladstone. Road, between Cobden and Derby Streets, also these installations that can ho changed over in Lowe Street and Peel Street between Gladstone Road and Read’s Quay. Under-verandah'con-struction is* being carried out on Gladstone Road between Grey and Derby Streets on the river side of Gladstone Road and other odd buildings where aerials are a danger. A few complaints havo been investigated and dealt with.” The reports were adopted without discussion. Recommendations of the Finance Committee were adopted as follows : That the Board deny any counterclaim from H.B. Ltd., for the use of its premises for storage by the un-der-verandah gang. The letter to the Borough Council from the engineer regarding the former’s complaint about the street lighting was approved. The committee considered tho pro forma invoices from Vickers N.Z. Ltd. for repairs and replacements to the V.P. engineer and decided to refer them to the consulting engineer. That the Board purchase the switchgear spares indicated by the Resident Engineer for tho sum indicated.
