VN.GTHER GPEAT DOUBLE BILL TO-DAY.

Something novel in sensations will be presented at both the matinee and night screenings at the Palace this afternoon and evening. “Twelve Miles Out” is a Metro-Goldwyn special and features John Gilbert, and “Half a Bride” features Esther Ralston.

John Gilbert is a man of many surprises to- movie-goers. He lias just unloaded the biggest of his brilliant career in “Twelve MUes Out.” Gilbert appears as a lone-hand adventurer, mixing unique thrills, breathless adventure hair-raising sensations and bewitching -love in a picture packed full of novel entertainment. The story is one of adventure on the high seas, based mainly on the latest phase of American life-bootlegging—-or the incessant, war between the rum-runner and the law. Romance, however, is part of the cargo, and the blend will keep onlookers tenderly sympathetic when they are not on tiptoes of sheer excitement, as it were, at the terrific battle of wits, fists, iron bars and pistols which finally takes place to settle a longstanding fued between Gilbert and his male rival. Joan Crawford plays opposite Gilbert, and gives a brilliant ■and sympathetic performance. Ernest Torrence, is also cast opposite Gilbert, Ills rum-running rival. Esther Ralston as Patience Winslow, lays the greatest ■ role of her career in “Half a - Bride.” 1 Patience Winslow; sensation-seeker, hears _ a radio lecture on marriage and is inspired to a trial marriage with a pale soiiled youth. After a . traffic accident. they spend a night in gaol and, in the morning Patience’s father, when he hears pf -the ■ escapade, decides 4o stop.it. Mr. Winslow has his daughter kidnapped by Captain Edmunds,' captain of'his yacht, for whom Patience has- a violent dislike. With Patience and her father aboard, the yacht- starts for Alaska but, seven days out. Patience tries to escape in a launch. Edmunds sees the boat, ' jumps overboard, and is towed roughly; ‘ Astrom- breaks, the launch is wrecked and Patience finds herself alone with' Edmunds ■■ on 'a .deserted island off t!ie Canadian, coast, and exciting scenes follow -until ■ a happy climax. ~.■ • -/- ;
