POVERTY BAY CLUB. FIRST TRIAL FOURS. The season’s racing opened last evening when three races were rowed in the first round pf the First Trial Fours. In the first contest F. Ardern v. S, Ovenden, a; fast race was. witnessed by a number of spectators on the Derby Street bridge, from where the whole race was clearly visible. Both crews got away to a. good start with Ovenden slightly in the lead, which he maintained'td" the Derby Street bridge, where both crews sprinted but Ardern failed to decrease the lead and Ovenden won by a length. 1m the second race A. Roache rowed S- Turner. The former's crew, being .the better trained', drew awa to ..a length from the start and maintained their, lead to the bridge, where sprinted but failed to close ' the.;. gap and Roache won by two length's. , Thp last race was between J. Barrett and W: Glover and was the best .of the .three. .Both crews . got away to a tgood.start with Barrett ( half a length in the .lead, which he maintained to the bridge. Glover’s crew after a great struggle drew level and both ' crews raced neck and neck to a hundred yards from the finish, where Glover, cpii.ckened his ... stroke and drew away to win by half; a length.
