FIRE WASTAGE.
STRICT INQUIRIES URGED(Pr«Eg Association.! AUCKLAND, Get. 25. At the annual meeting of • the South British Insurance Co., Mr V. J. Larner. chairman of directors, said the wastage by fire in New Zealand bad reached such enormous dimensions . that the press and public not only in New Zealand but Also in outside countries were taking notice. Incendiarism was most difficult to prove. AYhere there was the slightest- evidence it was imperative that exhaustive investigations should be made before the claim was passed. If magisterial inquiries were held useful information might be obtained as to their causes. The , suggestion of foul play should not bo the only ground for holding an inquiry, the main object being not to bring a suspected criminal to justice, but to endeavor .to obtain information that would tend to reduce the wastage of national substance. Excessive insurance, particularly on mortgaged buildings, was a difficulty which the insurance companies had’ constantly to contend with.
