The sequel to what was described bv counsel as a mad “get rich quick” scheme was enacted in the Police Court Vdav before Mr. J- R. Bartholomew, S.M./when two me» gamed Herbert Roilinson and Harry Vincent appeared on several charges of having obtained r.uswj r.y mean's of valueless cheque*-' - . Chief Detective Cameron, who conducted the prosecution, stated that the accused had travelled about the country attempting to form companies in connection with the petrol supply business, and whenever' tlfeir funds had run low they issued valueless cheques to meei their liabilities. In all, nineteen cheques had been issued, money to the value of £l5O having l>een obtained thereby. Both men-came or good families, Rollinson’s people being highly respected residents in the Timaru district. . Counsel for accused said that a mad “get rich quick” scheme had been their downfall, and they had been more foolish than criminal. Probation was asked for. The magistrate ordered accused to he detained in custody until Saturday in order that a report rmght-no received from the probation officer.
