Toasting “Nelson’s Immortal Memory” at- the Navy League dinner, Col. Amery declared that, in statesmanship since the war, the most difficulttask had been to strike a balance between upholding the unflinchingly essentials of security and contributing to the world peace. He emphasised that the navy’s training spirit and organisation had never been finer. Since the war dispositions had been made to suit the new Imperial needs.
Defending the Government’s policy relating to the Anglo-French pact, lie recalled that when he tabled proposals in 1927 they were promptly •so misinterpreted that they lmd not had a fair chance. All the world said ‘AA’hat fools you arc to go blundering like that. AVliy not prepare the ground?” Consequently, when France proposed compromise, Britain felt bound to assust, • hut communicated her proposals to the Lowers concerned. Again we. ivere accused of conspiring with France to present a policy utterly unacceptable to lha United States. Personally Col. Amery sa'd lie was not sure whether Bt itain would not be better advised to stand outside the European nations. Britain had no desire to combine, with any Power on the present naval programme.
