BOXING.

OPOTIKI BOXING ASSOCIATION

(Special To The Times). The president, Mr. J. Shaw, presided over a fair attendance of members at the annual meeting. The annual report stated that the past year had been the most successful in the history ■of the association. Commencing the season with a debit balance of £9l 2s 6d the executive were faced with a serious financial problem, but this had fortunately teen reduced to under £2O. The three tournaments .all .proved financially successful. Members subscriptions did not reach last year’s figures hut this had been, anticipated. Boxers’ expenses had been cut down to a minimum and-this largely contributed.to the reduction of last year’s liabilities. The assets now stand' at£l2o 10s . Bd. Three amateur tournaments were held during the season consisting of 27 louts. This brings the total of 12 tournaments .and 90 amateur bouts. The behaviour of the boxers had been splendid no suspensions, linos or disqualifications having been registered. The standard of the boxing had not been high on the average but two or three local Ibys give promise of developing into first class boxers. Fifteen boxers from this district were registered as amateurs during the season. The lease of. thp training shed was continued but the up-keep had been so heavy that the lease was terminated at the close of the season. Temporary arrangements would have to be made for training the boxers when future tournaments are being organised. Steps were taken to welcome Tom Heeney on his arrival in Opotiki the association co-operating with other sports bodies in entertaining the visitor at a dinner in the ltoyal Hotel. In conclusion we wish to extend hearty thanks to Dr. Budd, Mr J, D. Clark, Mr. W. Carruthers and Mr. J. O. Sullivan for various services . rendered. The election of officers resulted as follows. —President Mr. J. Shaw, (re-elected), patron, Mr. J. J. Moody, hon. treasurer, Mr. H. Larmor, hon. secretary, .Air. C. G. Hunt, hon surgeon. Dr. 11. B. Budd tre-elected). referee Mr. W. Carruthers; time-keepers, Messrs H. I'armer and S. M. Jephson; official seconds, Messrs C. Butt and C. Matchitt, hon. auditor Mr. son. General committee (4 vacancies), Messrs Butt. Burton. Johnson, and Matehitti The annual subscription was fixed at £1 Is. Messrs N. v . Hodgson, E. Herring' and J. O’Sullivan were elected new members. A heartv vote of thanks to the president and hon. secretary fur their work during the (past year brought the meeting to a close.
