GOLF
POVERTY BAY CLUB
OFFICIAL OPENING 'DAY
GOOD SEASON IN PROSPECT.
There was a very largo attendance at the Poverty Bay golf course on Saturday, when the club held its official opening day of the season. Messrs A. EL Wallis (president) and E. M. Hutchinson (captain) were unavoidably absent, and Mr. It. G. Burke performed the opening ceremony. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Burke expressed the op.mon that the season now opening promised to he one of the most pleasant yet experienced. It had opened most auspiciously with the course in far better condition than usually at this tune ol the year. The rains in March had had a great deal to do with this and had given the links a very good start in condition. They now had the Triplex mower which was doing invaluable service in keeping the fairways and rough in order, wlii.e the greenkeeper and .stall were excellent workers. Another notable advance this season was the securing of one of the leading professionals in the Dominion as resident coach. The standard oi local golf would be appreciably raised d tmlv one or two local players learned to hit the hall as did Air. Mclntosh. Already this season the men’s handicap committee had had the pleasure of reducing the handicaps ol several members which was an excellent augury for what-to expect when the season was still more advanced.
A CALL FOR DONATIONS. Mr. Burke also emphasised that much as the committee had disliked doing so, it had been compelled to call on members for donations to the extent of about £175 to pay for the Triplex mower. So far only about half this amount lmd been promised and it was .hoped that the remainder of members would respond liberally arid promptly. They could see vcr.v plainly that the new purchase was giving good gulfing value. Members should not mind giving a little extra this season, for there was no othei golf club in New Zealand which gave such good value to its members at so low a subscription as did Pove’-L Bay. Everywhere il was occasionally necessary to call on members ioi donations, 'and it was so localh, especially if Poverty Bay was to have a course to compare favorably with the leading ones of the Dominion. We had a big advantage in that the mem links were on ideal seaside golfing country and, it was needless to say. a golf course, in modern times, was a real asset to the common.tv. ‘Y trust and hope.” concluded -Mr. Burke, “that all members will have a season of soul-satisfying golf.’
