COUNTRY RACING- CLUBS REFUND OF TOTALISATOR'TAN SIR, G. HUNTER, WANTS PRINCIPLE EXTENDED (Special to the Times.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 2. A plea on behalf of country racing clubs was voiced by Sir George Hunter (Waipawa) in the House when speakings to - tile provision itf the Finance Bill extending the purposes for which totalisator duty may be refunded. Under section S• of the Finance Act said Sir George, authoi'ity wag given the Minister of Finance to refund to the small country el tills 1) per cent, of the amount received from the totalisator. and the clause in the Finance Bill was an extension of that principle. It would allow part of the refund to be devoted towards the reduction of* 'debts of the club, and for the purchase of. hunt club sites to encourage the sport of hunting. "I want to .'ask the Minister of Finance”, continued Sir George, "whether he will consider, if possible, the question of further extending, this principle next year, and will allow these amounts to be refunded to the various country clubs without any restriction in regard to, the expenditure other than that the amounts so refunded shall not be expended in ’takes. Many of the small country clubs, are laboring ujnder a great disability at the present time in making provision for the carrying on of racing. The slight concession made to the . clubs this i.sossioh provides for a remission in the charges through the gates, and is an indication that the Government realised the difficulties under which the country clubs are laboring. Unless they get some relief in the immediate future, however, I fear it will be absolutely impossible for some of those country clubs to tarry on successfully. ,It would be unfortunate for. the sport ifthe country clubs wore forced to close down on the ground of not being able to finance their institutions. I know this is not an. opportune time to' urge concessions, hut I hope that next session some substantial concession will ho made in order that these small clubs may carry on, and be put on a sound financial basis.” The Minister said that personally lie had no objection to tho • extension of the principle. It seemed to him that once, the money was remitted to the clubs tho "use they made of it Was' not of very much momiejrit. Sir ..George Hunter had suggested that tho'money should 'hot be used for increasing the stakes, h’ut it would be hard to, avoid that result, since once the general finance had eased up, the easier it would be to- increase the .stakes. That, of course, .was not tiny object of the remission. The Minister said he was prepared to consider the points raised.

SPEEDY LADY SPRINTER PROBABLE CONTESTANTS AT CHAMPIONSHIP • (By <.Stride.) That Miss /• Nonna Wilson, the Poverty Bay sprint champion, will meet stiff opposition at the New Zealand championships, is evinced by tlie fast times registered ,by lady athletes in test events held under the jurisdiction of the' Wellington and Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centres during the week-end. Competing on the Basin Reserve,' Wellington, under electric light. Miss M. Collins defeated Miss S. Swinburne by inches in 11 4-ssec., whilst Miss M. Boyd at Christchurch performed, a similar feat, winning her event easily. Both these are fine performances, especially Miss Collins’, who would bq under a disadvantage in artificial light. In the 100 yards national ladies’ championship I expect Miss Swinburne to lie the hardest to beat,, and 'she always performs best when opposed to stiff opposition. •) THROWING THE HAMMER RECORD..
