AMATEUR* OPERATIC SOCIETY

(Special to tlie Times.) OPOTIKI, Oct. 20. The Opotiki Amateur Operatic Society will give their first public performance shortly, when .they uni stage the well-known musical comedy ‘‘A Country Girl.” The cast will consist of 30 odd members. Ihe oichesfra will he under the. baton or Mr Carter Bowles. Rehearsals have been held regularly for some three months, the result being that some o-ood talent -has- been. - brought forward. It is confidently anticipated tliat the Society - will be of great assistance’ in encouraging and bringing out local musical talent. Dr. Budd is president of the Society. OBITUARY Advice has been received ol the death of an old Opotiki resident, Mr John Excell, who died recently at Mangaiti after a long illness. Deceased was horn in Harden, Kent, in 1852-, and came to the Dominion in the Ladysmith in .18/0. He first resided at Wanganui and later worked for the father of the present Gover-nor-General. Marrying in 1889 he took up land at Motu, selling out alter eight years, and coming. to Opotiki. where lie was . dairying for 13 years. Deceased leaves a widow, two sons and four daughters. The-annual' meeting of the iMiakatane Golf (Club, Mr L. Buddie, president, presiding, was held yesterday. The president reported steps had been taken to secure playing rights over the properties of Messrs T. M. Lawsou and Goyle. It was decided to incorporate the club to enable “it to enter into a contract for the acquisition ot a license to play over the. properties mentioned. ' , ' Rules drawn up hv Mr ' Suckling were referred to the committee for approval. The election of officers resulted : President, Mr L. Buddie; vice-presidents, Dr. Cronin and Mr F. Platt ; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. G. Cradwick; club captain, Mr 0. A. Suckling; committee. Messrs Columb, King, and Beckett, with two ladies to bemadded; auditor. Mr J. M. Curtis.
