CLIMBER GETS A SHOCK
SEEKING “GLIDING GLADYS.”
(Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, April 6. A painful accident befell a climber of Mount Ruapehu, Mr G. Grant, ot Wellington, a day or two ago. Mr Grant, who is not -familiar with the mountain, made the ascent alone, under very trying conditions, owing to rrost on the recent falls of snow. Reaching the summit, he was endeavoring to ascertain the usual starting point for the well-known slide, “Gliding Gladys,” when lie suddenly started to slide downwards at a terrific speed. Mr Grant’s predicament was most unenviable, and only his presence of mind and in some degree the softer snow at the bottom, prevented a fatality. He sustained severe bruises and ice abrasions. Two nights were spent at the mountain liut before Mr Grant felt equal to the n'ne mile trek to Oliakune, on which he was assisted by other climbers, who had arrived at the liut.
