BOARD MANNED WITH FREE
LABOR
WAIROA, Dec. 1. The Wairoa Meat Company’s works opened this morning. No union slaughtermen applied for work and the board was manned with free labor. Ample labor is offering, and the. company has a substantial waiting list of those wishing to come on as soon as supplies of stock are more plentiful. The season opened a fortnight earlier than last year. This will allow the men to become proficient liefore the heavy rush ~ of stock. A number of unionists applied for work in. other departments but little labor is required at present other than the company’s regular staff.—P. A.
POSITION AT WAINGAWA WORKS
WORK PROCEEDING SATISFACTORILY
MASTER-TON, Dec. 1. Volunteers working at Waingawa freezing works have, according to tho management, shown wonderful improvement! during the week which they have been working and a fair number of theni are already, doing round about the tally of eight head per hour, which entitles them to be classed as competent slaughtermen. The number of sheep and lambs killed to-day was 1030 and the work in every department is - proceeding satisfactorily. Tho management state that, even without an addition to the numbers working or further improvement there will be no difficulty in handling all fat stock likely to be offering this side of the holidays.—P.A. NAPIER WATERFRONT QUIET. MUTTON LOADED BY FREE ,LABOR NAPIER. Dec. 1. Mutton killed by free labor is being loaded to the Port Hobart by more free labor. At the freezing conference, matters in dispute were discussed. It is officially stated there is nothing to report. The conference will resume to-mor-row.—P.A. OPERATIONS AT LOCAL WORKS PROCEED QUIETLY. AMPLE LABOR OFFERING. Operations at both local works, were continued yesterday without incident. Ample labor is offering and killings should increase daily. The Tokomaru Bay works handled a limited mob of stock, hut it is not .expected that many sheep will be offering for a week or so.
