OPENING OF SEASON

GISBORNE CLUB * The official opening of the Gisborne Bowling Club’s season took place yesterday afternoon. Despite the inclement weather there was a large attendance of bowlers and lady visitors. The greens were in fine order, thanks to the Ground Committee, and the caretaker, Mr. P. Gibbon, late of the Tauranga Bowling Club, and the latter -was the recipient of numerous congratulations on his painstaking work.

The grounds presented a pleasing sjiectacie with the 1 gaily-decorated bunting. Amongst those present were the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wildish), Mr. A. W. Horne (President of the Gisborne Bonding Centre), and. Mr. Geo. Neill (President of the Tolaga Bay Club). The season was officially declared open by the President, Mr E. T. Doddrell. who extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. He read several Congratulatory messages from sister clubs and expressed pleasure in having present with him Messrs. Horne and Neill.

In reply, Messrs. Horne and Neill wished the Club every success during the coming season, the latter speaking of the pleasure it gave the members of his Club to he present at the tournaments in Gisborne. Mrs. Doddrcll then performed the ceremony of rolling kitty, afterwards bowling a bowl which was a toucher. Afternoon tea was served by the wives of the committee, assisted by young lady friends. Music was dispensed during the afternoon by an orchestra comprising Messrs. T. Shone (piano), Maisicano (violin), and J. Davies (cornet). The usual games between teams representing the President and the Vice-Presidents were then played the former winning by three points. OPENING AT KAHLUA Gaily bedecked with flags and the greens in splendid order, Kaliutia Club grounds made a very pausing picture on the occasion of the official opening of the season yesterday. A very large crowd of spectators, including many ladies, and a number of visiting players, were present when Mr O'. Prince ,president of the club, performed the opening ceremony.

In his address. Air Prince first read telegrams from the presidents of the Poverty Bay and Gisborne howling clubs wishing Kahutia the best of seasons. He then welcomed the many visitors ancl said lie was particularly pleased to- see players from as far away a,s Te Karaka and Tolaga Bay. Kahutia was making good progress and last season v as the fifth largest’ club in the North Island ancl seventh in New Zealand, from tlie numerical point of view. This season they had sonic twenty new members and would probably lb even higher lip the list. He also made feeling reference to the magnificent gifts of Sir Janies and Lady Carroll. Wlien the next opening came round, they expected that the pavilion would he entirely transformed and it would he a structure good enough for any club anywhere. Again he thanked the many visitors for attending the opening ceremony. Air A. AV. Horne, president of the Gisborne centre, congratulated the Club heartily on having such fine grounds ancl cm tlie pretty pietiu it presented despite the absence of tlie sun. It was very gratifying that the Club occupied such a high place in tlie list of New Zealand clubs, and they were very fortunate to have such keen supporters as Sir James and Lady' Carroll. By next year, with the projected improvements, the Club should be second to none in New, Zealand. Air Neave, president of the Tolaga. Bay Club, extended the heartiest wishes to Kahutia for a successful season and congratulated them on the excellence of the greens. He also expressed a wish that before long they would Ife entertaining visitors from Kahutia on his own home green. Air G. Neill, president of the ToTe Karaka Club, also congratulated the club on having such a. successful opening despite the unkind weather. Te Karaka was only a “baby’ 1 among clubs, but lie would guarantee any visiting bowlers a, very hearty welcome and Ire hoped that it would not be long before Kahutia took advantage of this invitation. Airs Prince then rolled the first bowl of the season ancl amidst great enthusiasm, it proved a “toucher”. She was then presented with a beautiful bouquet of spring flowers. As the weather''cleared. it was decided to have a “roll up”, and although a large number refrained from playing, the following games took place hut none was completer', it being decided to take no chance of injuring the green. There was an attendance of nearly ninety bowlers* and lady supporters at the official opening of the Poverty Bay Club’s greens. The greens were in excellent condition and promise well for a first-class season’s sport. The President, Mr. G. T. Bull, in declaring the greens .officially open, welcomed the visitors to the ceremony, which, he said, betokened the increasing interest in the “good old game.” He expressed gratification at the increase in membership, stating that there were nOw 106 members in the Club. The Club had also made an advance in another direction, ;securing a property adjoining the greens, which, it had been suggested, should be laid down in croquet lawns for the ladies. He also complimented the Social Committee on its activities in looking after the social welfare of the Club, and stated that, the coming season promised to ho one of the most successful in the Club’s history. During the afternoon tea was served by members’ wives and friends, which was appreciably accepted. . No games were 'played, it being considered that play would damage the greens. . -' .
