REAL ESTATE

FOKAIATION OF POVERTY BAY INSTITUTE. “RAISING STATUS OF BUSINESS.” The formation of a Poverty 7 Bay Real Estate Institute was decided on at a meeting of real estate agents of Gisborne and the district. The new body will affiliate with the New Zealand Real Estate Institute. The meeting here was addressed by members of the Auckland Institute, comprising the president, Air i' 1 . J. Crump, the secretary, Air T. Aldndoe, and the past president, Air A. \Y. Chick, at the instigation of the New Zealand Institute, who considered there was scope for the formation of a local branch of the organisation. Raising the status of real estate business by careful organisation and attention "to the highest business ethics was how ■ Air Crump 'described the objects of the Institute. He emphasised that Poverty Bay .was the only district in which the Institute was not firmly established, and that it was becoming increasingly necessary for real estate men to organise for national purposes as the Government contemplated considerable legislation affecting land upon which the Institute might have opinions to ex-

press. The practice in Auckland, he continued, was that applications for the granting of agents’ licenses were referred to the institute for recommendation, the magistrates recognising that that body was thoroughly able to vouch for the bona fidos of any applicant which it recommended. The result of the institute’s work in Auckland had been better business for the agents, 90' per cent, of whom were in the institute, and better attention for the client. Une point in which present-day practice 'differed greatly from that of'the past was' in the attitude towards another agent’s client. Whereas at one. time the prospective buyer was “fair game” for any competing agent, now that was dispensed with, aud the new system was much more satisfactory for agent and client alike. After the delegation had been thanked, the proposals were discussed by the meeting, and it was decided to support the formation of a Poverty Bay Institute. Details of the organisation were left to a committee.
