LIFT TRAGEDY
TWO STOREMEN CRUSHED TO DEATH.
WELLINGTON, Oct. 13. Two storemen, John Willias, a married man with four children, resident at Brooklyn, and Phillip Allan, a single man, living at Newtown, were found dead, crushed under a lift at the foot of the well in Howden’s buildings this morning. Both were employed by Messrs A R. Hislop, Ltd. No one saw the tragedy, but it is thought that they were looking down the shaft when the lift descended upon them, giving them no chance to jump clear.— Later. Very little additional information is available as to the exact manner in which the victims of the lift accident met their death. No one was present at the time and no one saw the men, except about ten minutes before the fatality occurred. No one heard cries. One supposition is that the men were looking over the top of the liar under the impression that the lift was below when it descended on their heads, inflicting terrible injuries.—P.A.
