FOUND IN RIVER

DISAPPEARANCE OF ELDERLY MAN SOLVED

The disappearance of a man named John Howartli, aged 65 years, was solved yesterday bv the finding of his body in the Taruheru River. While the launch. Hipi was proceeding to the upper reaches of the river past Lytton road, Captain Robinson noticed the body in he water. He communicated with the police, and Constable Morris and McDonald recovered the body and removed it to the 1 morgue. The deceased was a bachelor, and one of three brothers living in Gisborne, Messrs Thomas and Wm. Howartli being the other members. An inquest will be held.

MAN FOUND DEAD WITH THROAT CUT. DUNEDIN, Oct. 13. Alexander‘McKean, 49, a single man, was found dead at Palmerston this morning with his throat cut. — P.A.

LORRY BADLY' SMASHED

NAPIER. Oct. 13

A motor lorry- and its load of furniture were badly smashed by a train at Awatoto this evening. The lorry wheels sank in the shingle and the power was not sufficient to move it. The driver hoard the train coming and ran along the line in an endeavour to stop it, but was not successful in preventing a collision. —P.A.

TRAGIC FIRESIDE MISHAPS INVERCARGILL, Oct. 13,. A young girl, Mavis Perriam, aged 12, whose parents reside at Winton, received serious burns on Tuesday and is now in. hospital in a serious condition. She was standing .before an open fire when her clothes caught alight. Elma Ward, aged 4, of Wyndham died on Tuesday as a result of burns received the same morning. She was dressing before an open fire and her nightdress caught alight. Her sister attempted to put out the names by pouring on wat'er. She received serious injuries before the fire was extinguished, and .was sent to Invercargill hospital, whore she died as a result of shock and injuries.— P.A.
