FRENCH ADOPT COLONIAL TOTE (Received Jan. 25, 7.35 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 25.

The Morning Post says: _ A new pari-mutuel is being established on the French racecourse. The long delay between the end of a race "and the paying out of winnings has been a grave defect hitherto, and the Societe D’encouragement has now heckled to change to the vastly quicker Australian system as the result of a complete investigation in Australia. —A. and N.Z.C.A.

Aucklanders are reported to have won well over Cawnpore’s victory in the Telegraph Handicap. Lady Desmond (Limond-Bronze) udio raced well at Trentham, was sold prior to running, her races for 650 guinea's—a .good deal tor the new owner.

Possibly Enthusiasm would have won the Wellington Cup even if she had not interfered with Te Monanui and Star Stranger, but the mix up is another had advertisement for the false rail, and Enthusiasm had to come round her field to get-in a winning position at the bottom of the straight. Te Mbnanui’s performance was a very fine one, and, as at Auckland, he will do better probably at Wanganui. Star Ranger ran like a good one and Martuila who was paying a very tall price, came from a. rear position to dispute the finish with the leaders. As usual she ran a good race. After the success of Limited and Enthusiasm, punters expected F. Tilly to have nis usual “trot” but the Fordell trainer “broke” in the Telegraph Handicap, Tamatete, who was a strong favorite, failing to jump out with his usual brilliancy. Ohui dre>p the outer in the Ruapehu Handicap. Ohui may be good, but Trentham and maiden hack company at Feiiding is different. It may be too soon to write Tamatete down as a has been, as he is getting in lighter every meeting. Twelve furlongs is just a bit too far for Grand Knight at present, but he ran a good race in the Wellington Cup, finishing close up fifth. When he has gone through a preparation ,there is no dout that he will win races up to twelve furlongs and further as he does not pull in his races. -

Licinius ran his best race so far as a three-year-old in.the Telegraph and may yet win a decent sprint race. His fall at Palmerston did him no harm.

W. H. Gaisford gave 900 guineas tor the Kilbroney-Fulsome colt and. may again have a good ‘ two-year-old to carry his colors. Fulsome is a sister to Humbug and a nice quality mare.

Peterwah, Una Dillon, Roma Bingen, Makauri Belle, Bingen King and Halmore compose the Gisborne horses entered for the Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club’s meeting, for which entries have filled really well. It will be, the second occasion on which the totalisator has been in use.

Gala Day, who won the Consolation Handicap at Trentham, is a real horse, or he would never have stood the racing that has been apportioned him this season. After racing hard at the A.R.C. meeting, he galloped well enough for anything.
