CRICKET

PLUNKET SHIELD Otago v. Wellington. DUNEDIN, Jan. 25. The Otago v. Wellington match was resumed this morning, in fine v ea r ther. The wicket was good. The home side, requiring 182 to win, opened with Worker and Shepherd, line and McGirr leading the attack. Lambert (12th man), fielded in place of Collins, who was unwell. Worker clipped Brice’s first, which resulted in a “no ball” for three. Shepherd had a narrow escape in this over, poking one up, which liadeock at square leg just failed to reach.

Worker added a single, and then tipped McGirr to Hiddleston in the slips.—l—4—7—. McMullan was the newcomer, and Shepherd pulled Brice into Baclcock’s hands.—2—3—B.

Galland opened by banging Brice into the pavilion—the first sixer of the match. Runs came steadily, helped materially by smart running between the wicket, whilst the fielding was* not so keen as .in Otago’s first innings. Badcock replaced Brice, Galland getting him through fine leg for two.

A period of tedious play followed, McGirr sending down successive maidens. Galland, when 19, had a let off. He sided the ball straight up, McGirr and Hiddlestone being under it, .but a misunderstanding between the two fieldsmen saw the easiest chance go begging. An hour’s produced 47 runs. Galland hit another six, this time at Badcock’s expense. Brice replaced McGirr at 73. The latter bowled steadily, swinging in disconcertingly, and was always difficult to score off. McMullan square cut Badcock to the fence, Galland getting Brice to the boundary twice. Henderson came on in place of Badcock at 86. Galland, who was now batting much more confidently, reached the half century in 78 minutes. With the grand total at 99, Galland skied one to Badcock.—3—s3 —99. The century took 100 minutes. A. W. Alloo cut Henderson through the slips to the fence, but was not particularly at home to the fast bowlers, In the next over, McMullan brought 110 on to the board with a boundary. When the luncheon adjournment was taken, the score stood at 112 for three wickets.
