POVERTY BAY CLUB

At the weekly meeting of the comm ttee of the P.B. Rowing Cluu held last even'ng, the following members were present: Messrs F. Stiehbury (chairman), ’ N. McConnell, E. A. Gatehouse. L. O’Neill and L. Illingworth. A medrl for the first year rower winning most heats, but r.o other trophy was received. Mr. L. O’Neill was e'ected a member of the committee to fill a vacancy. The following is the draw for the first trial: L. Wilcox v. It. Stevenson; Stiehbury v. C. Ryan; L. O’Neil! a bye. It was decided to close the entries for the second trial fours on Wednesday, November 4. Tb s event to be raced on November 14.

HENLEY FOUR-OAR RACE

N.Z. GREW BEATEN IN SEMIFINAL.

MELBOUBNE, Oct. 24

At Henley the foiir-oared mile race was held in perfect weather. There was a record attendance. In the first heat Hamilton (New Zealand) beat Melbourne by a length and &half, Banks (Victoria) being third. Hamilton started well and scon had a few feet lead. Although the stroke Sandos. lost his slide immediately after the start, Hamilton maintained the lead throughout, winning easily Time: bm.in 33sec. In the semi-final Hamilton drew the north side. West Australia got away first, leading-by six feet. At the quarter-mile Hamilton sprinted and caught West Australia, gaining two lead at , the three-quartei distance. Both crews finished strongly. West Australia winning in a thrilling finish by two feet. The spectators gave a. great ovation to. the crews, some thinking it, a dead-heat. The stroke Sandos, said the crew pulled well, but met their equals and were just beaten on the post after a great race. Time: omin 40sec. West Australia won the final from Rockhampton bv a length and a-half. —U.P.A.
