•WAIROA. SUCCESSFUL GATHERING
T3io Wairoa Caledonian Society’s sports which were postponed, front Boxing Day on account of the rain were held in the sports grounds on Saturday -in fine weather. There was a largo attendance of spectators present and during the day some exciting finishes were witnessed.
At the request of the committee who held a meeting on Boxing Day to postpone the sports, the Gisborne athletes/who had come over in the morning stayed overnight for the meeting on Saturday. During their stay they were billeted at the Ferry Hotel by the Sports Club who did all in their power to make th© hoys’ stay in Wairoa a pleasant one. The results are as follows 100 yards , maiden : B. E-innan 1, I. J. Hurry 2, R. Single 3. Won easily. Time, 11 1-osec, 120 yards handicap.—ll. Phillips (11yds) '1; A. E. Ingram (6yds) 2; C. Cram (10yds) 3. In a great finish.. Phillips won hv inches with Cram inches away third. Time 12 3-5. One mils cycle handicap.—Galbraith (240yds) i; R, Dolman (scr) 2; L. Hall 45yds) 3. The limit man Galbraith made the best of his start and when the last Jap was entered . still had TOO yards lead. Dolman riding splendidly failed to catch him. Hall was 10 yards further back. Time, 2min 39sec.
220 yards handicap.—A. E. Clough (12ydsj 1; A. E. Ingram (12yds) 2; J. Knox (30yds) 3. The backmarkers were soon in front and after a great raco Clough won by 14yds. Time, 26secs. Putting the shot.—Boh Pouri (scr) 1, Ormond 2, McGregor 3. Distance, 34ft 4in. Throwing the hammer.—L. Hamilton (2ft) 1 • J. Boyle (scr) 2. Distace, 75ft 3in. Two mile cycle handicap.—R. Dolman (scr) 1; E. Hamilton (05yds) 2; T. Twoomey (400yds) 3. Dolrnan again rode well and caught the field with a lap to go, eventually winning by a yard, from Hamilton. Time, Grain. 7secs. 440 y arcis handicap.—W. Dinman (25yds) 1; J. nKox (45yds) 2; E. Kingston (25yds) 3. Won easily. Time, 53 3-ssec. High jump handicap.-—A. E. Ingram (scr) sft lin, i. ; N. Phillips (scr) sft, 2; C. Cram (scr) 4ft 11 in. 3. 880 yards handicap.-—W. Daman (45yds) 1, A. E. Clough (30yds) 2. Won by 2 yards in a good finish. Time, 2min 3-osee. One mile cycle handicap—Galbraith (scr) 1 ; Swoomey (syds) 2. These two sprinted for the last 40 yards and Galbraith eventually won by half a wheel. No time taken.
Three mile cycling handicap.—R. Dolman (scr) 1 • E. Hamilton (105yds) 2; B. Boyle (loOyds) 3. Dolman who had. been riding well during the day caught his field with'four laps to go and after a lap sprint won by 2 yds. Time, Sin 10 4-ssec. One mile handicap.—W. Dinnan (60yds) 1; T. Goodall (45yds) 2. Wen by .3 yards. Time, «smin 13sec. . During the day several Highland events were got off and there is a likelihood that half a dozen of the girl competitors will be seen at the Ngatapa Sports to be held at Patutalii Domain. The Gisborne athletes returned home after the sports. — Special.
70E0MARU. SUCCESSFUL GATHER T.N G. Tho Tokomaru Bay meeting attracted a large crowd to the sports ground, and as a result the War Memorial fund will benefit- substantially. During the day a refreshment stall was conducted in aid of the Cricket Club, while a collection was also taken up for the same object, with very successful results. The various events were run off expeditiously, there bring good entries and keen competition, with the following results: — fCOyds open handicap: T. Tibbie 1. 160 yards maiden: H. liindmarsh 1 200yds open handicap: P. Tibbie 1. 120yds hurdles: AY. Aupourf 1. Higlr jump: T. Tibbie 1, W. Aupouri 2. Upon jump, hunters’ style: J. Potaka’s White Wings 1, Kelly Martin’s Wild Bill 2. Open jump, steeplechase style: J. Pot-aka’s White Wings 1, Kelly Alartin’s "Wild Bill 2. Flag race: Urupu 1, P. Callaghan 2 Bending race: P. Collier 1, Urupu 2. Stockhouse race: P. Callaghan 1, Jacob 2. Potato race: P. Callaghan 1, Kelly Martin 2. Tilting the ring: A. H. Smith 1, T. Martin 2. Much credit is due to the officials for the excellent arrangements, and for the manner in which the gathering was carried out.
MOTUL BOXING DAY FIXTURE. The annual gathering of the Motu Sports Club was held in Mr R. S. Caul ton’s grounds at Motu on Boxing Day.
