CRACKED SPHINX.

- —— ■*— -* SENILE DECAY IN THE NECK. A crack has appeared in the neck of the Sphinx. The Egyptian ' Antiquities service has informed the Ministry of Public Works in Cairo of this, stating that the crack is rather deep. The Sphinx of Gizeli. one of the wonders of the world, is really a great rock, which most probably always wore some human semblance and was carved to accentuate and define this some 4000 years before Christ.

The passage of time has much eroded its features, and sand has drifted around it and covered the lion-like paws with wnich the old sculptors prolonged its bust. , It is also somewhat dwarfed by the Pyramids, which stand close to it. But none the less it remains an unequalled symbol of majesty and of mystery, gazing through century after century with “tlu> same tianquil mien everlasting.”
