HERTZOG’S ELECTION POLICY
AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT THE FIRST PLANK.

General Herizog, declaring his general election policy in his constituency at Srnithfield, started with vehement criticism of General Smuts, particularly of the Premier’s activities during the Rand revolution. He emphasised the Government extravagance regarding the great war and land settlement, and declared if Nationalists were called on to form a Government their first point would he agricultural development; secondly, protection of their own industries f thirdly, a thoroughly comprehensive attempt to solve thw- problem of unemployment; fourthly, the creation of a new portfolio of Labor; fifthly, solution of the native question. This must ho based on the existence, of European population and civilisation so that South Africa’s sons and daughters will he -able to make a living in their own country. Civilised Labor thus must he protected against the pressure of uncivilised labor. Regarding the native problem, equal care w’ould he taken for the development and the existence of the native within Hs territory. Sixthly, Hertzog supported a revision of the system, of taxation. ar.d said at the same time they must carefully investigate how l far the mines are able to pay a fair share of taxation. • He also favored the establishment of a State hank. — Reuter.
