Dr. diaries Childe in his presidential. address Indore the, Congress of the British Medical Association at Portsmouth, said that the five most formidable endemic scourges to-day arc cancer, tuberculosis, rickets, venereal disease and alcoholism. He emphasised the evil effects of slum conditions. Omitting cancer, of which little is known, tuberculosis and rickets accounted for most of the cripples. Cancer, tuberculosis, venereal disease and alcoholism accounted for most deaths, and venereal disease and alec hoi ism for ifi'-ost of the misery and moral degradation 0,1 our race. Taking the cost of the country’s sickness and disablement at £150,000,000 annually he country could afford to spend £50,000,000 annually or £I,OOO, 000,000 capitalised at 5 per cent, m clearing the slum areas.—A. and X.Z.
