In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday Alexander Watson was ordered to pay forthwith the sum of £lO Ids 4d, tho plaintiff being Frederick Stennor. The penalty for default was fixed at ten days’ imprisonment. The first meeting of the newlyelected County Council will be held on May 23. The Council consists of tho following members: Messrs G. M. Reynolds, J. Barns-Graham, W. G. MacLau-rin, F. S. Bowen, 0. Gibson, J. Tombleson, D. Parker, C. Matthews, G. Witters and T. Holden. The point was raised a,t the Wanganui Court the other day as to wliat language a person should use within tho hearing of passers-by so as not to bring himself within reach of tho law (states tho Wanganui Herald). The Magistrate replied to Mr Slipper that if ho happened to bo in his back yard or garden and hit his thumb with a hammer apd used profane language it would be quite all right providing it was not heard by some person passing hy. He suggested, however, it would be better to confine this class of language to tho back garden and not tlie front. Mr Arcliey made the trip especially to inquire into the natural history of these islands, and brought hack a great many specimens. Me has numbers of insects, crustaceans, and' the: smaller invertebrates. All these specimens will be sent to workers in, the particular scientific groups for investigation. Many of the specimens acquired will also be used for exhibition in the museum. At the monthly meeting of the Gisborne Land Board yesterday, there were present: Mr. V. I, Blake, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Messrs. A. .1. Cameron and J. H. Reid. The following transfer was approved: Lection 1, block XIII., Motu (area 1210 acres), registrar of Supreme Court in estate of William Henry Wood, to William Luke Kilmers. The application of Mrs Constance M. Rutledge for section 2, block XV., Moanui S.D. (containing 1998 acres) was approved. Two other applications for land were approved. These were Frank MacDonald's application for sections 1 and 4, block 111. Whangaparaoa township; and-James MacDonald’s application for sections 2 and 3, block 111., Whangaparaoa township. It is understood that Mr Fletcher, editor of the School Journal, is being promoted to take charge of the staff employed in conducting the very sucI cessful correspondence classes which ! the Education Department instituted I some time ago for the benefit of child- | ren in the baekblocks. These classes ! at present comprise some 230 children | in various parts of the country, and t will shortly comprise considerably | more if the department decides to transfer to them the pupils of household schools in which there are only two or three pupils. Ihe Minister of Education indicated recently that possible these very small household I schools would he closed down and their pupils taught by post. It is also understood that the staff of the School Journal is to be reorganised, and that whoever is appointed to the post of editor will take charge of the Education Gazette as well as the Journal. —Special.
