W AIHI-T AURAN GA RAILWAY.
AUCKLAND, Feb. 24 -A deputation from the Auckland Railways League waited on the Hon Mr Coates urging the construction of the VY ailn-Tauranga line, on which W aim miners unemployed could o u engaged. The Minister, replying, said that it would not be sound business to change over from the Taneatua section because the latter would open up country as far as Opotiki and tiafhe from Gisborne and permit traffic by sea from Tauranga. He was avoiding expenditure on bridges and buildings as much as possible as the money so spent would largely go out of the country. No one knew what the position regarding unemploy-_ meat would be this winter and his endeavour was to make provision in that direction. People were complaining about the number of votes on the Estimates for railway construction. “As a matter of fact, there " ere but three lines which should be proceeding at present—the North .-Vuckla nd, South Island Midland and \V,aikokopu branch. The remainder were those to which unemployed could be diverted if necessary. Road v oiks didn’t offer the same opportunity as railways and were further irom the centres. As regards the Y aihi line he would consult with the engineer.—P. A.
