THE MEAT POOL

SELECTION OF BOARD ON MONDAY. SCHEME WILL SOON BE AT WORK. WELLINGTON, Feb. 24. ihe Combined Producers’ Committee and Parliamentary Committee is expected to have a full muster on Monday, when the selection of the producers’ representatives on the Meat Export Board will be undertaken. A member of the committee stated to-day that this method of selecting the board was a temporary measure adopted in view of the desirability of bringing the board into existence quickly. It is proposed that next year, a new board shall be elected on a much wider franchise, but this cannot he arranged quickly u„a aeJay at the present time is considered to be highly undesirable. One °x the tasks to be taken in hand immediately by the board is the selection. of a representative or representatives in London to constitute the London Agency for the handling of the pooled meat. Members of the existing committee have been considering some names, including that of at feast one gentleman whose wide expei lence in the employ of one of the great meat companies outsrem New Zealand would be of value to i ' e ' V i/i <^ producers. Such a man uou Id have to be paid a big salary, but the committee believes that the Board must be prepared to offer big money if it is to get the best available service. The Prime Minister stated tins evening that the Board would be at work within a week or two. He did not know that the election would be completed on Monday since the committee might have to consult individuals after nominations had been taken, hut lie expected to see the scheme placed on a working basis very quickly now. Mr Massey mentioned that the Government’s nominees on the board would not be selected until the names of the producers’ representatives had been announced.—Special.
