TAXATION BURDENS.

MR, LYSNAR FAVORS SPECIAL LOAN. •‘GOOD OLD POSTERITY.” In the ciHU'sc of bis remarks on the Public Service Wages Adjustment Bill in the House, Mr. W. D. Lysnar, M.P., said:— “As on other occasions, I would urge the Government to utilise some of its accumulated surpluses for the relief of taxation in this Dominion, and that they should do it at the present time. What was the money taken from the people for if not to provide for such a time as this? Is there any time when they could better used? Although the Government have the money invested m soldier-settlement lands, they are an asset for the Dominion, and that is quite proper; and there is nothing to prevent the Government taking, say, £3,000,000 out of that asset and applying it in the reduction of direct taxation.

An Plun. Me nib or : Why not apply it in the reduction of the war debt? / MY. Lysnar: Let posterity pay that debt. An Hon. Member: Good old posterity.

Mr. Lysnar: There will be a reduced posterity, but if the honorable gentleman’s party got into power the people would die off, like they are doing in Russia. But why should the people of the present time find the blood and the money to uphold the flag of the country and leaving no« thing in the way of responsibility to posterity who follow us to enjoy me freedom of the flag? I say the Government should borrow £3,000,000 at Home and reduce the taxation. If that was done for two or three years it would help to give confidence; and the Government must do something to establish confidence, for taxation is hindering development and frightening industries from the country.”
