FREEZING SEASON.
EFFECT OF WET WEATHER. WORK SHOULD CEASE ABOUT MAY. The effect of the present spell of wet weather on operations at the local freezing works was referred to yesterday by a prominent freezing works official in conversation with a Times reporter. So far as stock was concerned, he said, lambs would be most affected, commencing to scour. Sheep would not be affected to the same degree, though they would be to a lesser extent, and the effect on stock in regal’d to tiie works would be shortly lelt, though that was not the ease at present. In his opinion, however, the bad weather was not likely to make much difference to cattle.
Referring to the position 411 connection with local works, lie pointed out that the Kaiti works were at present quite busy and full time was being worked, though this had not been the case a week or so ago.
In answer to a query as to the probable length of the season, he stated that the present season would not bo as good as last year and. those of previous years. ‘The Kaiti works could be expected to close down about May, whereas they usually went on to June or July. He pointed out, however, that this did not mean that all hands would be employed until then, hut operations could be expected to last in full swing for at the very least another month or so. Much, however, depended on the weather, and if they got a month s good conditions in this respect, stock would conic forward much more freely, resulting in a corresponding lengthening of the season.
