N.Z. IMMIGRANTS FOR AMERICA.
APPLICATION TO INCREASE QUOTA.
WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. The Consul-General for the United States has communicated with Washington asking that a large increase shall be made in New Zealand’s quota of immigrants into the United States. The Dominion under the existing American law, is entitled to send "only fifty persons annually into the United States, whereas the applications that reach the ConsulGeneral for permits to settle in America number many hundreds. He states that New Zealanders are the best possible type of immigrants, and suggests that the quota should be increased to at least IflOO for this year. The Consul-General mentions that there is an enormous amount of unemployment in America, so that people who are thinking of leaving New Zealand to escape the slump conditions may be making a mistake. —Special.
